Fight on the surface or take refuge underground
"Underfoot" is a small eight to twelve player Capture the Flag map for Unreal Torunament III that I created in ten days. In "Underfoot", warring factions compete for control over an abandoned mining facility. The map features two unique thematic areas: the exterior surface and an underground interior which players can enter through a variety of approaches that range from safe to high risk.
DESIGN GOALS
Verticality: “Underfoot” features a high degree of vertical gameplay and an underground environment that is visually and mechanically distinct from the level’s surface area. The surface area also features two major tiers of gameplay area. This layout provides ample opportunities for varying angles of attack, but remains accessible enough for newcomers to quickly grasp.

Choice & Flow: “Underfoot” provides players with choice by maximizing
their options through its flow. If players change their mind about a path they
take, there are many opportunities to reroute. Players can even use the Impact
Hammer or Rocket Launcher “skill jumps” at the expense of health to clear
otherwise impossible gaps, adding to the map’s risk/reward opportunity.
